Applications : This is an oxysterol, or oxidized derivative of Cholesterol, which is the primary sterol found in mammals, comprising 20-25% of the structural components of the plasma membrane. Plasma membranes allow water to pass through easily but are comparatively resistant to ions and protons. Cholesterol influences the fluidity and permeability properties of the membrane and affects the functions of transporters and signaling proteins. Additionally, cholesterol acts as an endogenous agonist for estrogen-related receptor α (ERRα).
